1. EDITORIAL – “WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT WE BELIEVE- THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND METHODISM REMAINS COMMITTED TO ARMINIAN THEOLOGY”:

Dr. Calvin H. Sydnor III

A couple of weeks ago, I read a headline in the Religion Section of the local newspaper that exclaimed, “Southern Baptist Seminarians embrace Calvinism.” Though my first name is “Calvin,” I do not embrace Calvinism.

The article went on to say, “Almost 30 percent of recent graduates of Southern Baptist seminaries who became church pastors say they are Calvinists, according to a survey by the denomination. I was shocked because I would have thought almost one-hundred percent of the Baptists, except Freewill Baptist, embraced Calvinism.

Calvinism is the religious doctrine of John Calvin, which maintains that salvation comes through faith in God, and also that God has already chosen those who will believe and who will be saved.

Methodism refutes Calvinism; Methodism follows the doctrine of “Free-Will” or Arminianism, a school of soteriological thought that is embraced by most mainline Protestants, and because of John Wesley’s influence, Arminianism, named after the Dutch theologian, Jacobus Arminius is the most well-known doctrine in Methodism. Methodism believes that salvation comes by grace alone and that salvation can be lost and that salvation is based upon continued faith.

Simply put, Methodists believe that it is the sinner's choice of Christ, not God's choice of the sinner that is the ultimate cause of salvation.

Calvinists believe that it is God's choice of the sinner, not the sinner's choice of Christ that is the ultimate cause of salvation. Some refer to Calvinism as the doctrine of “eternal security”, “once saved, always saved”, or “irresistible grace.” For example, when AME pastors use the term “irresistible grace” they are not using Methodist terminology, they are using terminology from Calvinism and Augustinism, which we would expect Baptists and Presbyterians to use.

Well, if I was surprised that only “…30 percent of graduates of Southern Baptist seminaries who became church pastors say they are Calvinists…, I was shocked to read in the same article that “Among all Southern Baptists pastors, only 10 percent follow Calvinism.” That was a shock, because I guess that would mean about ninety-percent of the Southern Baptist pastors follow the Methodist Doctrine of Arminianism or something else.

I continued to read because I wanted to see where that article was going with those statistics.

The article concluded with the statement that Southern Baptist leaders worried that embracing Calvinism would erode enthusiasm for evangelizing non-Christians because, among other beliefs, Calvinism teaches that God chooses whom to save and that takes away the urgency of getting individuals to accept Jesus Christ. John Wesley and Richard Allen saw that coming a long time ago and embraced Arminianism, the doctrine of Free-Will.

We, African Methodists, believe that individuals have free-will and today, we remain committed to Arminian theology. I hope that we know what we believe.

2. THE CHRISTIAN RECORDER REVIEW: “THE GREAT DEBATERS”:

Last night (Wednesday, December 18, 2007), my wife, Reverend Charlotte, and I attended an advance showing of "The Great Debaters." It is a tremendous film and it has a message for everyone; for every ethnic and racial group, and it is especially a motion picture that young black Americans should see. The PG-13 movie has strong messages of determination, pursuit of excellence in the face of opposition, and individual and collective resolve.

Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker are superb actors. Their acting pulls the movie-goers into the action on the screen. The acting is so real that I felt as if I were a part of what was going on in the movie. The young actors, Nate Parker, Denzel Whitaker, Jurnee Smollett, and Jermaine Williams were absolutely superb and delivered exceptional performances.

The movie was more than the debate team from all-black Wiley College; it was a movie about relationships and the racial mores of that era. The movie handled the sensitive racial issues forthrightly and realistically.

There was not one word of profanity in the movie, but verbal interactions between the characters were intense and profanity was not needed for emphasis or to make a point.

Go see the movie. The audience, last night was engaged, and responded in unison at several points. The movie ended with a round of applause and many of the theater-goers sat and watched the credits scroll down the screen. We didn't want the movie to end.
Comments were heard by theater-goers as they walked out of the theater saying they were going to see it again or purchase the DVD.

This would be a great movie for churches to take YPDers, high schoolers and college students. There is a Bible study guide that has been developed for the movie. “The Great Debaters Bible Study Guide” is an outstanding pedagogical resource when working with young people in churches, schools, and as a tool for family discussions. “The Great Debaters Bible Study Guide” has been emailed to all subscribers to The Christian Recorder.

I recommend that you see the movie first before reading the study guide.

Wiley College officials announced that Denzel Washington is donating $1 million to the college to re-establish its debate team.

3. STARVE FEAR BY TRUSTING IN GOD:

*Attorney Gloria Sydnor Smith

On March 4, 1933, in his Inaugural address, Franklin D. Roosevelt told the nation that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." So true.

The more you think on or speak on negative things; fear gets rooted in your system. Fear feeds on negative thinking. Fear grows stronger the more you rehearse negative thoughts, images or scenarios. This negativity will eat you from the inside out and is truly a monster.

Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, and a man who was intimately familiar with fear tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7 that God did not give us this a spirit of fear; but of power, love, and a sound mind. God give us power, love and a sound mind. Therefore, we must use our power, love and sound mind to defeat the spirit of fear.

Remember, this is a spiritual war. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 that the weapons of our warfare are mighty when we use the power of God for pulling down strongholds and casting down arguments that exalts itself against the true knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. We have the power to control our negative thoughts, which are not in accordance to God's Word.

Paul tells us in Philippians 4:8 to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report. All of these things are positive, not negative.

The next time you begin to think negative thoughts, replace those thoughts with positive thoughts. Instead of thinking that you don't have enough money to pay your bills, imagine yourself on vacation in the Bahamas. You have the power and sound mind that God gave you to change negative thoughts into positive thoughts.

The fear monster is trying to prevent you from achieving the desires of your heart; don't let that happen. According to Psalm 37:3-4, God will give us the desires of our heart when we trust in Him, do good, dwell in the land, feed on His faithfulness, and delight in Him. All of these things require positive thinking.

Don't allow negative thinking and fear to control your life. Starve the fear monster by positive thinking. Trust God and trust God’s Word.

4. MASSIVE DAMAGE IN OKLAHOMA:

Sister Jackie Weary

Oklahoma was hit by a terrible ice storm late Saturday night, November 8, 2007. We were traveling back from the 12th District Planning Meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas. The storm continued into Sunday morning, which left over most of the Tulsa area without power; we were without power for seven days, but thank God for natural gas which saved some of us from freezing and having to leave our homes and go to a shelter.

As we tried to sleep on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, all we could hear was the sound of firecrackers and thunder as the tree branches fell all around us. Sparks were seen on the power lines as a branch fell on them in the back of our house.

The City looked like a tornado had hit it with trees and power lines all over the place. Trees and tree limbs were on top of houses, garages, power lines, making it hard for automobiles to get thru to streets.

As of Thursday, December 20, 200, Presiding Hampton informed me that himself along with two pastors and at least, twelve other lay members are still without power. The authorities are working hard to restore power to everyone by Christmas.

Batteries, candles and ice were a commodity here, very limited and sometimes none to be found in the city.

Groceries and gas were limited also. We waited in line for gas and food well over an hour. Incomes were lost and food was lost due to the power off at most companies and homes here in Tulsa. Some of our AME Churches were without power one Sunday and some have been out for two Sundays.

We are grateful to the Pastor and members of Vernon A.M.E. Church, Tulsa, OK, Rev. Michelle K.T. Moulden, pastor whose church served as a shelter site. Presiding Elder Dennis J. Hampton, worked with community food banks and other resource agencies to keep the shelter stocked with adequate food and supplies. As the Conference Lay President, I enjoyed cooking, serving and talking with those who were there at the shelter for a few days until my new grandbaby arrived in the midst of ice storm.

Please keep us in your prayers and any donations to friends and family here in the state of Oklahoma I am sure would be appreciated.

The Governor of Oklahoma has declared Oklahoma a Disaster Area. FEMA is only helping the city now to help recover costs of cleanup and other storm related damages.

5. SHAKING THE WRIST INSTEAD OF THE HAND:

Rev. N.T. Pitts,

It is without a doubt that our hands are the main transmitters of germs. It may well be advised that we could avoid the transmission of many germs by reaching beyond the hand and shaking the wrist when greeting.

We cough into our hands; we handle gas pumps that have been handled by many; we push buttons and hold onto rails pushed and held by others. We use restrooms, although some wash their hands but some don't; we handle money that has been handled by mechanics, construction workers, sanitation workers; politicians, pimps, pushers and prostitutes, drug users, gamblers, transients, and we use telephones used by many. And for certain we should shake the wrist or touch elbows if one or both are in the process of eating.

I am suggesting an alternative to hand-shaking. It is, by no means, meant to frighten anyone. Of course we all know that we will never be completely germ-free for there are dangers seen and unseen; but we can minimize the possibility contracting diseases just by reaching beyond the hand and shaking the wrist. It is just another health tip.

I think this makes sense. What do you think?

Eatonville, Fl.

6. PRESIDING ELDER REV. JAMES FORD PRAISES TEAM TYLER DISTRICT:

By: Delanda S. Johnson
Special to the News

On Saturday, December 8, members from Johnson Chapel AME Church in Malakoff attended the Tyler District Planning Meeting in Kaufman, Texas.
Host Pastor Rev. Alton Paris and the members of the Macedonia AME Church rolled out the red carpet for approximately 200 people across the Tyler District.
Worship Leader Rev. Reginald Houston ringed out praises for the congregation and welcomed everyone to the meeting. Rev. Houston said, “We are here to magnify the LORD.”

By using demonstrations, Rev. Houston pointed out the meaning of a crunch bar.

C—stands for Christ
R—stands for Really
U—stands for Understand
N—stands for Needs
C—stands for Call
H—stands for HIM; so when you put all of this together it’s “Christ Really Understand Needs; Call Him.”

Presiding Elder Ford stated to the excited congregation “when praises go up; blessings come down and this is what will make Team Tyler District great.”
He commented that Team Tyler District was a District on the move and that other ministers wanted to come to this District.

The speaker for the noon hour of power was the distinguished and awesome man of God, the Rev. John H. Holmes, Jr. Holmes is the Pastor of Hamilton Memorial AME Church in Texarkana, Texas. Holmes theme, “Inadequate Power” briefly shows the difference between church member and believers. Holmes stated, “God wants us to work with HIM; not for HIM.” “If we look at the three Hebrew boys, they keep the faith and new that God want with them. The king tried to burn them up, but God with God’s power stepped in and proved that God had all power in God’s hands,” said Holmes. Holmes wanted the congregation to know that your power comes for Jesus; and that God is a way-maker; and that God will make a way out of no way.

After lunch, Presiding Elder Ford presented several ministers with their permanent appointments.

The Rev. Bill Burton of Athens, Texas was assigned to St. Thomas AME Church in Alto, Texas and the Rev. Frederick Moss of Cedar Hill, Texas was assigned to Johnson Chapel AME Church in Malakoff, Texas.

8. THE ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-THIRD SESSION OF THE MISSOURI ANNUAL CONFERENCE:

*Rev. JoAnn B. Owens

October 22nd- 28th , 2007 marked the 153rd Session of the Missouri Annual Conference of the 5th Episcopal District. It was hosted in St. Louis, Missouri at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church where the Rev. Alvin Smith and First Lady, the Rev. Beatrice Smith serve as the First Family,. The conference was spiritually led by the highly capable and gifted team: Bishop John R. Bryant and his wife, our Episcopal Supervisor of the Women’s Missionary Society, Rev. Dr. Cecelia Williams Bryant. The theme for this conference year is “Managing Well,” which comes from Psalm 24:1.

The Pre-Conference Musical, conducted by Bro. Kenton Saunders, Jr. was held on Sunday, October 21st at the host church. Through the exuberant musical selections, our hearts were prepared by the Holy Spirit and ushered into the spiritual experiences which we would embark upon for the coming week.

On Monday afternoon, October 22nd, Rev. Beverly Stith, “Women In Ministry” coordinator, organized an afternoon workshop for the Women
In Ministry which was conducted by the Rev. Pamela Mason, after which we engaged ourselves in an evening of God-inspired worship of Scripture, prayers and songs, which lifted our spirits to higher heights and deeper depths.

The clergy met with Bishop John R. Bryant on Tuesday morning, October 23rd for breakfast that was sponsored by the U.S. Bank, which has formed a partnership with the A.M. E. Church and the Urban League to help our communities. While the clergy enjoyed breakfast and gained valuable knowledge, the Women’s Missionary Society convened under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Cecelia Williams Bryant, our Episcopal Supervisor, Beverly Thomas, Episcopal President, and Jeanette M. Dampier, Women’s Missionary Society president. The Missouri Conference missionaries continue to “serve well” along with “managing well” in their “global mission” by each church donating baskets which were auctioned and the money was to be sent to support the Katrina victims. Also, the missionaries collected money to send to the Red Cross for the fire victims in California. On Tuesday evening, the Rev. Brenda J. Hayes, pastor of the First A.M.E. Church in Kansas City, Kansas preached the “Night in White” missionary sermon from Leviticus 23, entitled “Please Celebrate Me Home.” After a soul- stirring sermon, seventeen missionaries were capped by the Rev. Dr. Cecelia Williams Bryant.

The 153rd Session of the Missouri Annual Conference was called to order by Bishop John Richard Bryant on Wednesday morning, October 24th. Roll call, organization of the conference, transfers and the report from the board of examiners were received. The pastors were called to give their reports on stewardship for the year. Pastor’s reports from Wednesday through Friday demonstrated “Serving Well” and “Managing Well” are alive and well in the 5th Episcopal District. Two pastors: the Rev. Anthony Joyce and the Rev. Dr. Morris were moved to superannuated status. Also, Sanders Chapel - Wyatt and Perry Chapel-Charleston were granted a merger.

The Rev. Dr. Robert Scott of Central Baptist Church conducted a series of studies on Wednesday and Thursday morning surrounding our theme, “Managing Well.” He illustrated three kinds of leadership: Christian, Church, and Secular. Rev. Dr. Scott helped us to recognize that our focus must be Christian leadership which yields kingdom building. The Dean of the institute is the Rev. Dr. Timothy Tyler.

On Wednesday afternoon, First Lady, Carlisa Worsham of Olive Chapel, was the Women’s Missionary Society “Hour of Power” speaker. She blessed us with a thought-provoking message from I Samuel 25. She challenged us to, “Use Our Power to Wage Peace.”
On Wednesday evening, the opening worship grand processional began at St. Paul AME, the host church. Clergy, choirs, and laity filled the sanctuary as they blended their voices to sing the opening hymn, “And Are We Yet Alive.” The Rev. Noella Austin Buchanan, pastor of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, preached the opening sermon entitled, “How Did I get Here?” In her conclusion, she said, “You are here because God has called you to labor, and nothing can stop you.”

Thursday afternoon October 25th, the “Hour of Power” sermon was preached by the Rev. Earl Harris, a former son of the Missouri Conference and now of the 3rd Episcopal District. Rev. Harris preached from, II Kings 6:1-7. He challenged us to “Recover the Cutting Edge.”

The Missouri Conference Trustees presented Bishop John Richard Bryant with a $15,000 check for the host church to set up a satellite of the Interdenominational Theological Center. What a blessing and accomplishment! In addition, Rear Admiral, retired Navy Chaplain, the Rev. Barry Black, presently, chaplain of the United States Senate, preached the Thursday evening sermon in celebration of the “Black Christian Men of Excellence” from Genesis 19:12-14, entitled “The Loss of Influence.” He challenged us to stay valiant, and not to drop our guard. After the soul-stirring sermon, the room was filled with pride as each church honored one man for his outstanding service for the year. Brother Malik Ahmed was honored with “The Son of Thunder Award.”

Elections were held for the 2008 General Conference delegates on Friday morning, October 26th. Delegates nominated were: the Reverends Noella Buchanan, Edmund Lowe, Alvin Smith, Timothy Tyler, and Presiding Elder C. Jessel Strong. Alternates chosen were: the Reverends Claudine Murphy, Darlene Smith, Beverly Stith, Marvin Sullivan, and Debbie Thornton. The Lay delegates elected were: Brother Eddie Broomfield, Sister Sherrilyn Hammond, Sister Dorothy Powell, Sister Nona Simpson and one youth, Sister Shannon Schooler. The alternates lay delegates chosen were: Sister Mattie Berry, Sister Sharon Schooler, Sister Irma Thompson, Sister Pamela Williams and one youth alternate, Brother Darryl Davis.

Immediately following the elections, the “Hour of Power” was preached by a former daughter of the Missouri Conference, the Rev. Portia Cavitt, who preached “AWOL Christians.” Rev. Cavitt asked the rhetorical question, “Are we showing up for the work God has called us to do?”

On Friday evening we had an electrifying experience with the laity of the Missouri Conference doing a new thing under the leadership of the president, Brother Lamar Rose. The Missouri Conference youth choir sang, “We’ve Come to Worship in all that We Say and Do.” The laity responded in worship through songs and dance.

The Women’s Missionary Society met early Saturday morning, October 27th for a breakfast forum at the Crowne Plaza Hotel under the supervision of our Episcopal Supervisor, the Rev. Dr. Cecelia Williams Bryant. The Young People’s and Children’s Division were enlightened by Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, who gave them a plan from Jeremiah 29:11, along with an explanation about goals, study time, friends, and choices.

Before the Saturday morning Ordination service at the host church, the Rev. Kevin Jacques memorialized three individuals who have passed from labor to reward: Bishop Robert Thomas, Supervisor Don W. Guidry, 16th District, and the Rev. David Allen, 5th District.

The Ordination sermon was preached by Presiding Elder Vernon J. Burroughs from the San Francisco-Sacramento District in California. He instructed as well as challenged clergy, young and old to “Preach Hope in a Hopeless Situation” from Ezekiel 37:1-10.

Nine Deaconesses were consecrated to service. Four licentiates were admitted on trial, five itinerant deacons and three local elders were ordained.

Saturday evening, the Young People and Children’s Division had a worship experience at the Crowne Plaza Hotel that included the 5th District’s choir. They came from all over the district to proclaim the glory of the Lord and to hear the Word of God spoken by Bro. Robert Brown.

The closing Worship & Commissioning Service was held at the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Bishop John Richard Bryant used Ephesians 5:31-6:4 and preached a powerful sermon on, “Managing Family.” In his exegesis of the sermon, Bishop Bryant explained that if families are not managed properly it shows up in our churches, schools, and community. He further explained that God respects marriage and that a model has been left for us to follow, that being Jesus Christ and the church. Pastors were then commissioned for their assignments for the new conference year.

The host pastor, the Rev. Alvin Smith, the first family and the entire congregation of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church excelled in love and warm hospitality to all. The Mother Conference was most certainly “Served and Managed Well” under the dynamic leadership of the Right Reverend John Richard Bryant and the Rev. Dr. Cecelia Williams Bryant.

13. NEWS AND APPEAL FROM, AME- MONTANA:

Our church delivered brand new clothes to the Cheyenne reservation on Tuesday Dec. 11th. When we got to the Cheyenne reservation they were so happy with the clothes from the A.M.E. Church. They said it was the only donation they had gotten for Christmas for their foster children. We took five industrial size garbage bags of brand new clothes that I got from a department store that closed several years ago.

They were overwhelmed because they said it was the only donation they had received for Christmas. Right now there are 80 foster care children that have no toys. The reservation is very poor; it breaks your heart to see such proud people with so little.

It meant so much to them that the A.M.E. Church remembered them. Also on the way back we stopped at the Crow Reservation to visit with the Social Service director and his assistant had attended a revival at Wayman Chapel in Billings, Montana and said she loved Rev. Teresa Swift and the rival!!!!!
Kudos to Rev. Swift and her ministry for people traveled from the Indian reservation to hear the word. Presiding Elder please share this email with Rev. Swift. This is why I love the A.M.E. church because we are so inclusive.

I thank God for our Presiding Elder who foster's ministries to Native American. And I am proud that the fifth district has set this precedent of ministry to native people. My prayer is that each district in the U.S and Canada will have Native American ministries. If ever there is a group of people that need the A.M.E. Church it is native people.

Bishop our church has done all we can do, but the Cheyenne need more help for Christmas and throughout the winter. 80 foster care Children from newborn to 18 need help.

I am requesting if at all possible if the Fifth District could send money or toys for the children. I am also asking for help from First AME in Seattle; First AME, Tacoma and members of the AME Church.

Anything that is sent will be appreciated, especially toys.
