11.  INSPIRATIONAL MOMENT - "BEYOND EGO" BY RALPH MARSTON:

Go beyond your ego, and there is nothing to fear.  Go beyond your ego, and anything is possible.

The anger, the worry, the anxiety, the disappointment and conflict all come from seeing life in only the most superficial way.  When you get beyond the need for drama, possessions and appearances, a vast realm of possibilities suddenly opens up.

Are the things you fight and fret over really that important to who you truly are?  Or do they merely serve to prop up a limited ego-based sense of self?

Have you ever been totally absorbed in something so truly magnificent that you momentarily forgot yourself?  Such moments are glimpses of how powerful it can be to go beyond your own ego.

Beyond your ego, you are not limited by what you need.  Beyond your ego, you are free to fully become the best of who you are.

Listen to your ego, then softly let it go.  The more you move beyond it, the more freedom you will know.

(-- Ralph Marston)

9. MAYOR JAMES HAHN TO ATTEND GROUNDBREAKING OCT. 4 AS WATTS CHURCH 'DIGS DEEPER' WITH $30 MILLION MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT, PUSHES TO KEEP KING/DREW HOSPITAL OPEN

LOS ANGELES - (September 30, 2004) - In the face of the possible closure of King/Drew Hospital, one Watts institution pledges never to turn its back on the South Los Angeles community.

On Monday, Oct. 4 at noon, the Grant African Methodist Episcopal Church will make its single largest investment in Watts since its founding in 1906: groundbreaking on the residential phase of a $30 million mixed-use development promising affordable housing, retail and commercial space and badly needed jobs.

"On Oct. 4, we will literally dig deeper into our century-long legacy in Watts," said the Rev. Leslie R. White, pastor of Grant since 1994. "Through the Grant Housing and Economic Development Corporation, we're writing a new chapter in history - a chapter of renewed hope and revitalization. It's a great day for Grant and it's a great day for Watts!"

U.S. Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) and Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-Los Angeles) are expected to join confirmed participants Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn, City Council members Bernard Parks (CD-8) and Janice Hahn (CD-15) and more than 300 local, county and state leaders in the north parking lot of the Church for the event.

Imani Fe East and Imani Fe West will encompass 2.4 acres on the east and West sides of Central Avenue between 103rd and 105th Streets. The $12 million initial phase will add 65 multi-family, four-bedroom apartments and approximately 1,500 square-feet of community space. The residential phase, totaling 108,000 square-feet, is slated for completion in the fourth quarter of 2005.

The remaining $18 million is proposed for senior living accommodations and approximately 11,000 square-feet of commercial space - enough for a family-sized restaurant, a financial institution and offices for several small businesses - in a community that's still reeling from the devastating effects of the race riots of the 1960s and 1990s.

Equally as important, Imani Fe Courtyard will add more than 60 critically needed permanent jobs. The project's architect, Archeon International Group, will be on site during the groundbreaking to take applications from qualified individuals for the development's construction jobs.

"We're committed to bring life, hope and prosperity to this community," White added. "Soon boarded buildings will be made beautiful and neglected areas will be nurtured and contagious smiles of empowered residents will be made manifest."

White knows first hand the frowns and dejected looks on the faces of a community when a major medical institution is forced to close its doors.

In his Sunday sermon, White, who led a large congregation in St. Louis before relocating to Los Angeles, spoke candidly of the adverse effects on the Black community when Homer G. Phillips Hospital was shut down some 25 years ago.

"Homer G. Phillips was one of the best-known hospitals in the country," White recalled. "Like King/Drew, Phillips Hospital had an international reputation for training the 'brightest and best. " Yet, the mayor reneged on his promise to keep the hospital open, and in 1979 - in the cover of darkness no less - ordered that the equipment, patients and staff be packed up and shipped out. To this day, the

Ville community of St. Louis is trying to emerge from its economic depression as a result of the hospital's closure."

White is determined not to let history repeat itself in Watts: he's working alongside Waters, Hahn and others to keep King/Drew open by attending and hosting planning meetings, writing letters and delivering fiery addresses to the more than 2,000 parishioners of Grant.

In the meantime, however, he and GHEDC Executive Director Chris R. Jordan remain optimistic about the total impact of Imani Fe and say a prayer of thanksgiving for federal and state funding of the project.

Indeed, years of relentless lobbying in Los Angeles and Sacramento have resulted in a $12 million California tax credit allocation for Imani Fe in the fall of 2003, Jordan explained. At 9-percent, the credits are considered the most competitive funding source available in affordable housing construction.

"We are actively seeking the remaining $1.2 million from federal, state, local and private sources," said Jordan, noting unsuccessful attempts to obtain city funds in recent months. "We are confident these sources will be identified in the very near future."

Jordan was careful to note that the shortfall will not hinder construction of the residential phase, pointing to the group's success in obtaining a $2 million federal Community Development Block Grant in 2002, funding used for land acquisition along the Central Avenue Corridor.

"GHEDC is committed to developing itself into a model of community economic development and empowerment," Jordan said. "Through Imani Fe, we're only seeing a glimpse of what is in store for Watts through the efforts of GHEDC."

The groundbreaking is one of a myriad of events occurring during the 80th Session of the Southern California Annual Conference, Oct. 3-10. More than 3,000 pastors and parishioners from A.M.E. churches as far away as Bakersfield, San Diego and even Las Vegas will converge on the Carson Community Center, 801 E. Carson Street, next week. A complete schedule of activities is available online at www.ame-church.org/2004confschedule.htm or by visiting www.grantamechurh.org.

About Imani Fe Courtyard

The $30 million multi-use project will redevelop 2.4 acres between 103rd and 107th Streets on Central Avenue in Watts. It is the largest development of its type in South Los Angeles in more than two decades. Ground breaking on the 108,000 square-foot residential phase of the project - made possible by a $2 million federal grant for land acquisition and $12 million in state tax credits - will occur on Monday, Oct. 4 at noon. The initial phase, named "Imani Fe" for the

Swahili and Spanish words for "faith," boast 65 multi-family four-bedroom apartments and are scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2005. Future phases focus on senior living and commercial retail space, adding in excess of 60 permanent jobs.

About GHEDC

The Grant Housing and Economic Development Corporation was founded in 1992 and strives to create viable and community-controlled economic bases in South Los Angeles. The GHEDC actively identifies, researches and engages in community economic development, with a special emphasis on the Central Avenue Corridor of the Watts community. Projects presently underway or in the works include the development of low-cost housing, small-business incubation, day care programs and educational opportunities for youth and adults. Chris Jordan has served as Executive Director since November 2000.

About Grant A.M.E. Church

Grant African Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1906 in a one-room house on Manhattan Street (now 113th Street), and bears the name of the Right Rev. Abraham Grant, presiding bishop at the time. The congregation of more than 2,000 parishioners has worshiped in its existing facility at 10435 South Central Avenue since the mid-1950s and has seen two of its pastors - the Reverends Henry W. Murph and John H. Adams - elected to Episcopal Service. The Rev. Leslie R. White has served as pastor since November 1994.

3.  BISHOP VASHTI MCKENZIE'S ISSUES AN "AME CALL TO ACTION!":

Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, President of the Council of Bishops, Bishop Gregory Ingram, Secretary, Bishop Phillip R. Cousin, Senior Bishop.

The Council of Bishops is issuing an "AME Call to Action" on behalf of our brothers and sisters devastated by a series of hurricanes in Districts 9, 11 and 16.  An unusually active hurricane season has led to the loss of many lives, great destruction of churches, personal property, power outages, businesses closing, or severely impaired.

The Southeastern portion of the United States and the Caribbean has had more than enough wind and rain.  Still, this past weekend, Hurricane Jeanne blew into the Bahamas and slammed into Florida dumping tons of rain, eroding beaches, bringing down power lines with more than one million people without power.  Homes have been flooded from high water storm surges in low-lying areas.  And, the hurricane season is not over yet!  The hurricane season does not end until November.

The Sixteenth District

Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry returned after viewing the devastation to report that many AME’s are without shelter, food and fresh water.  More than 88 AME families are homeless and one pastor and family of eight are still reported missing.  Haiti, Dominican Republic and Jamaica were the hardest hit.  The AME church in Grenada was completely destroyed.

Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry will be returning soon hoping to receive funds for the District's rebuilding efforts.  Please forward donations:

The Sixteenth Episcopal District of the AME Church

1968 West Adams Blvd., Suite 314

Los Angeles, California 90018-3515.

General Officer George Flowers, Global Missions also just recently returned from the 16th District.  He took much needed medical supplies to the Richard Hildebrand Clinic in Haiti.  He indicates that the greatest help so far in that region has come from the

International Red Cross and the Church World Service.

Dr. Flowers indicated that non-perishable items and other goods might need to come in later weeks to the Caribbean.  Significant ports of entry areas are still blocked.  There are goods still sitting on docks for the lack of help and in some places it is not safe to travel yet.  Monetary donations are the best form of help at this time.

The Eleventh District

Bishop McKinley Young reports that in Florida some churches have sustained severe damage, blown roofs, damaged siding, shingles and windows.  More than one million homes are still out without power and the newest hurricane exasperates the situation.

Bishop Young indicates that the Bahamas sustained great damage and needs the most help at this time.  The Reverend John White, Sr. has been named the chair of the disaster relief effort for the 11th Episcopal District.  Contributions may be sent to:

The Disaster Relief Fund,

11th Episcopal District Office,

101 East Union Street, Suite 301

Jacksonville, Florida 32202.

The Ninth Episcopal District

Bishop T. Larry Kirkland states that the Mobile, Montgomery and surrounding areas have been the hardest hit in the 9th Episcopal District.  A few churches have sustained damage along with extensive loss of personal and real property.  The clean-up effort on the Gulf Coast is on-going, with many just returning to their homes or having power restored before Hurricane Jeanne came along this weekend.

The Reverend James Rouse is one of the chairs for the relief effort.  Donations may be sent to

9th Episcopal District Office

2101 Daniel Payne Drive, Building 2,

Birmingham, Alabama 35214.

The Council of Bishops urges all members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church to respond to this "AME Call to Action."  Here is an opportunity to demonstrate the Love of God towards those who are in dire need!  The majority of the presiding bishops are requesting disaster relief funds to be brought to Mid-Year Conferences and Planning Meetings.

AME Call to Prayer

African Methodist Episcopal churches all over the world are asked, not only to act, but also to pray!  All pastors are asked to lift up prayer for the victims of Hurricanes Bonnie, Charley, Frances and Jeanne (and any subsequent hurricanes) in their worship services each Sunday until the end of the 2004 hurricane season.  In every worship opportunity, pray that the Lord says, “Peace Be Still” to hurricane force winds and rains!  Pray that storms will pass over to the North Atlantic far away from islands and the large landmasses.  Let us, as AMEs  “touch and agree” in prayer for the safety, security and recovery of our brothers and sisters.

“If my People who are called by my name should humble themselves and pray…”  Together, we can demonstrate the strength of our concern for one another.  Let us put "feet to our faith and teeth into our plans of action" to help the victims ravaged by this series of serious storms.

4.  PRAISE REPORT FROM THE SIXTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT

On September 16 at 7:00 p.m., Saint Paul A.M.E., Valdosta, GA. served as the host church for the Sixth Episcopal Districts Lay Convention Worship and Communion Service.  The Lay delegation throughout the Sixth District were present in strong numbers despite the threat of inclement weather brought on by Hurricane Charley. Our Presiding Prelate, Bishop William Phillips DeVeaux preached a powerful message entitled, "Grown Up Christians." The Lay members from Georgia have been talking about that sermon! The Presiding Elders, Pastors and the Lay organization of the South Georgia Conference were pleased to have been afforded the opportunity to host one of  Bishop DeVeaux's first preaching engagements in the Sixth Episcopal District.

Saint Paul A.M.E. Church's 138th Church anniversary held on September 19th  was a blessed success.

We are pleased to announce that the Reverend Maria Mallory White preached a powerful sermon entitled "The Invincible Institution."  Reverend Maria allowed the Lord to use her in a mighty way. At the afternoon service we were blessed to have Pastor John F. White, II, and the New Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Tallahassee, Fl. as our guests.  The worship service was high in the Spirit, and the preaching was dynamic. Pastor White preached from the subject, "Strange Path to Power."

Several elected city officials and candidates for office this election year were present for the afternoon service including the mayor of Valdosta who presented Pastor Bruce Francis with the Key to the City of Valdosta.

10.  A MESSAGE FROM THE REVEREND DR. LESLIE WHITE, GRANT AMEC, LOS ANGELES:

Good Day to All:

I pray that you are doing well.  The 80th Session of the Southern California Conference, is marching on.  We are looking forward to a good time in the Lord.  There is a letter coming to you by snail mail, that has good information, and I had the Worship Bulletin information for/from our printer, so that participants may have a heads up.  Those who are on the Internet I wanted to send it this way also.  Hopefully all Worship participants will see your assignment and be prepared.  If you see errors please feel very free to contact me by e-mail, or phone:  323-564-1151.  But look for your snail mail.

The Robe attire for those worship services; we wear robes: Wednesday, wear that robe of yours that is special colorful, bright, and gives much glory to the Lord.  If you do not have one of them, Black is always in order.  Saturday, we wear Black Robes.  Sunday we are in White Robes.

I now want to admit to an attempt to make all other preachers/pastors/everyone, just a little tempted, who are not members of the Southern California Conference.  I know that many of you are not members of the Southern California Conference, though indeed some may want to be, but I wanted to just give you a glimpse of "how we do it" on the Westside and on the West Coast!!!!!!!  Hopefully, it will bring a smile to your face, about your denomination on the West Coast.  Further, I pray that you will also include us in your prayers, that we have a refreshing and empowering Annual Conference.  Transitions impact our entire church, and there is naturally stress upon our great body of Christ.  So I on behalf of countless others seek your prayers, for the continued growth of the church and the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord!!!!  We thank God in Christ, that Bishop John Richard Bryant, and Rev. Dr. Cecelia Bryant are at the helm of this great and diverse district!!!!!!!  Please keep them lifted in prayer!!!!

Please know that you are "sho' 'nough" welcome to visit this great Annual Conference.  Please see the attachments.  I have included with Web Sites where the Cyber-Broadcast in real time {live} shall be found, of our Annual Conference.  The Link shall be operable on October 1, 2004 and continue to October 31, 2004.  All Worship Events and Business Sessions, shall be Cyber - Broadcasted.  For those who are in the language that is streaming.  The Sunday Concert, at Grant Church, all events in the Main Community Hall of the Carson Community Center - Monday - Saturday, the Youth Night Celebration on Saturday, at Grant Church, and the Closing Commissioning Worship Service, shall be Cyber-Broadcasted {streaming} for your viewing pleasure and inclusion.

Grace & Power;

Leslie R. White

There is a document attached that can be used local so that we as members of the AME church help mobilized to get the voters registered and get voters to the polls for the upcoming election. Our right to vote was struggle for and died for by our ancestors.   We need to exercise our rights and encourage others to do the same.
